One hot trend we are loving for Fall/Winter 2013/4 is the easy, clean sophistication of white. As it turns out, white furs are currently being revisited, not only by designers but also by a new crop of fans. There is something so elegant about white fur, the way it nearly glows in the light, exuding a stately formality and youthful elegance at the same time. Since fur is a natural product, simple color descriptions such as “black” or “white” are not sufficient.  So, white is never just white: there is ice white, milk white, eggshell, creme, beige, etc.

Mink Coat Madness

While some trends come and go (we’re looking at you, mesh), fur has stuck around. Over the years, icons from Marilyn Monroe to Madonna have embraced fur, and the luxe look is once more one of the Fall/Winter’s biggest trends.

While Joan Crawford’s performance in the 1945 film Mildred Pierce scored her an Academy Award, there’s no question that the actress’s fur coat also stole the show.

Natalie Wood wasn’t nominated for an Oscar in 1966, but the actress dressed like a winner, wearing a sumptuous mink coat to the Academy Awards.

A super luxe full-length Ranch Mink Swing Fur Coat from Marc Kaufman Furs in New York City.

Of all the types of fur we love, mink is probably the most ingrained in popular culture and our collective psyche. This iconic fashion item, honored in countless Hollywood films, has retained its  status ever since the post-WWII boom.

A Timeless Classic —  Mahogany full length mink coat by Marc Kaufman Furs

Years ago, that little touch of mink really played a significant role in expressing the American dream. As a successful man’s gift to his lady, the mink coat was more than a garment  – it was a rite of passage crowning status in society (be it on Park Avenue or in suburbia).

Today’s mink is definitely not ‘your great-grandmother’s mink’. Farmed/ranched pelts can be nearly twice as large as the ‘Mustela Vison’ found in nature, and also come in a greater variety of natural colors (from pearl to sapphire to mahogany) and mutations (cross mink or jaguar mink, for example). Innovations in manufacturing and production allow for extraordinarily creative designs that are much lighter in weight, though still warm, luxurious and durable.

American Legend, NAFA, Kopenhagen Fur, SAGA and their respective producers are at the root of the phenomenon behind today’s mink. Through highly developed veterinary science and natural selection, exceptional animal care and welfare standards, they  produce the highest quality mink used by today’s top designers and manufacturers.

Brown Mink Fur Jacket from Marc Kaufman Furs

From coats to jackets to accessories, mink fur is overwhelmingly favored as the go-to fur of choice; its inherent beauty and versatility is favored across the globe. In the U.S., close to 75% of all fur sold is mink, whether long-haired or sheared.

These days, mink fur is definitely a much more egalitarian fashion material.   This fashion staple is most often used in its natural state, but also transformed to great effects –ranging from shearing the fur into velvet pelts or corduroy ribs, as well as dying or printing the hair or leather. It is, once again, definitely not your great-grandmother’s coat anymore.

Recently, reversible mink garments are even becoming the norm for both male and female customers.  But always, mink retains its glamour, its elegance and its rich, luxurious appeal.

Check out this stunning sheared bleached mink hooded jacket with short sleeves from Marc Kaufman Furs

It can certainly be argued that mink is the go-to fur par excellence. It seems to always have been around, worn by grandma, the hipster gal next door, even worn in museum painting galleries… just go check it out for yourself.  Even sex kitten, Eartha Kitt sang about it, “Mink Schmink”, so did ‘bad ass’ punk rocker Cristina’s with “Don’t Mutilate My Mink”! Then again, who would mess with her?

In fact, to many people the word fur means mink. Just ask John Water’s sidekick, Ms. Mink Stole… if only?  Why the fascination with mink?  Well, in practical terms, it is one of the most durable and versatile furs, one that is popular with both men and women.  It lends itself to a broad variety of technologically innovative effects including weaving, knitting, shearing, laser cutting and tip-dyeing, which makes it ever-so popular with designers.

Also, since gaining its “It” status as the fur of choice with the post-WWII “upwardly mobile wives” to its position with the 1980′s “yuppie” gals, who would rush out to put their first mink coats on layaway, and even through its popularity today with designers and fashionistas around the world, mink has reigned supreme.

The Ultimate Luxury Gift

Elizabeth Taylor epitomized Old Hollywood glamour and was often photographed swathed in fur. Rumor has it that she once walked into Bergdorf Goodman to order 200 pairs of mink earmuffs as holiday gifts.

Seduced by Fur Scarves

Seduced by Fur Scarves

Scarves are the ultimate Fall/Winter accessory because they can “class” up any outfit without even trying. Want a quick way to turn jeans and a t-shirt into an acceptable evening look? Throw on a scarf. Turn a plain black evening dress into an unforgettable red carpet worthy look by adding a chic fur scarf. The Fall 2013 season has taken this classic accessory and given consumers something to look forward to.

Long and Luscious

Just like a flowing mane of hair, the elongated scarf is sexy, flirty and adds a dash of mystique. Regardless of the fabric or print a longer scarf can do double duty as a shawl/wrap thrown on for cooler evenings on the town. A hidden secret of many stylists is that a longer scarf is a fail safe choice for those who find themselves fighting the battle of the bulge because it helps to elongate the torso and  provides an instant overall lift to your look.

Short &  Sweet

When you think of shorter scarves your mind automatically tends to think bulky and constrictive. Not so as scarves have become far more light weight and versatile, especially when it comes to fur scarves. The advancements in knitting have made fur scarves lighter, more breathable and far easier to wear year round.

Fur Storage How to Store a Fur Properly Marc Kaufman Furs NYC

How to Properly Storage a Fur Coat Marc Kaufman Furs NY

To Maintain the quality and life of a fur coat, cold fur storage is an essential part of the maintenance required along with proper fur cleaning.

Reversible Ranch Mink Short Coat from Marc Kaufman Furs

Store your fur garments in cold storage when you are done wearing it for the season or not using it. This is one of the most important steps you can take in preserving your furs. There are no rules or set dates in regard to when furs should be stored. Whenever it is warm enough outside to be done wearing a fur coat for the season is when you should put it in storage. By the same token, when it is cold enough to justify wearing a fur (depending on your furs individual level of warmth) bring it home from storage. (Usually when it is cold enough to wear a winter jacket, it is time to put on your mink coat). The more time a fur is in cold storage, the longer it will last. Professional Cold Storage facilities should have the following characteristics:

  • 34-45° Fahrenheit is optimal, but any temperature under 55° is worthwhile.
  • Humidity controlled between 45 and 55%
  • Vermin and insect proof
  • Theft protection (vault architecture, alarms, guards or other methods)
  • Minimal U.V. light exposure
  • Ample space for each garment
  • Easily accessible (you may want your garment for an event or suddenly cold weather)
  • If your furriers storage facility is on site, it is always a good idea to ask them to see where your fur garments will be stored.

WHY “COLD” STORAGE?… A SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION

The more time a fur coat spends in cold storage, the better. Please note the word “COLD”. Storing a fur at room temperature negates the most important benefit of fur storage. If a storage facility is kept at room temperature or warmer, then you should consider looking for another facility that meets the temperature and humidity standards.
This is why… as temperature decreases (gets colder) molecules slow down. In biological materials, the less molecular activity, the slower the biodegradation process. One may ask “Why not just freeze it?” You may think that would suspend your fur in time, and this is true. But, if we think back to 5th Grade science class, we remember that when water freezes, it expands. When freezing and thawing is repeated season after season the expansion and contraction stresses, stretches and tears the material on a molecular level and actually speeds up deterioration. The same concept is demonstrated on city streets every spring thaw when pot holes appear. Also, frozen materials become brittle, risking cracking and breakage

This same principle applies to the natural oils in fur and leather materials that keep them soft and pliable. Colder temperatures slow down the evaporation of these necessary oils in your fur garments. Once the oils are depleted from fur or leather it can tear as easily as tissue paper.
With the understanding that colder temperatures protect fur and leather materials against deterioration and drying (as long as there is no risk of freezing), the experts advise that any temperature under 55°F is worthwhile and temperatures of less than 45°F are considered especially valuable to the preservation of fur and leather materials, with effectiveness increasing as temperatures decrease.
Note: It is always a good idea to ask your furrier to see their storage vaults, assuming they are on-site (see below “About Storage Facility Locations). Remember, you are the customer giving them your hard-earned money, you have every right to ask and they should be pleased to oblige you.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMIDITY CONTROL

Humidity level is important when a fur will be hanging in one place for a significant amount of time. If the humidity is too low (dry air) the natural oils in the pelts will evaporate more rapidly causing the garment to become dry and deteriorate. If the humidity is too high (damp air) they pelts can rot at a fast rate.

Marc Kaufman Furs NY How to Maintain a Fur Coat Fur Storage Cleaning

How to Maintain a Fur Coat Fur Storage Fur Cleaning

Dark Green Plucked Beaver Jacket Buckled Sleeves and Belt

Given the right attention, your fur coat will make you look gorgeous for decades. In fact, you’ll probably get tired of it before it wears out. While today’s furs can be trendy, you can even restyle them after a few years to keep in step with fashion — if they’ve been pampered properly.

Unless you have a very delicate fur like chinchilla, your fur coat is a fairly durable item and must simply be treated with common sense. Furs like cold, hate heat. They don’t like friction. They don’t like chemicals. They like space. They like to be cleaned often, but only by a fur professional.

1. Insure your fur on your homeowner’s policy for its replacement value, so you won’t be heartbroken in case of theft. Furriers usually offer nominal insurance coverage while your coat is in storage and sometimes make further coverage available for a small fee.2. Give it a good home. Be sure you put it in a coat closet that is not exposed to light (which will fade your fur) or heat. Check for hot water or steam pipes in the wall. Then be sure it has room to breathe and isn’t being crushed by other garments.

3. Hang your fur on a broad-shouldered or padded hanger with a long neck. No wire hangers. Ideally, ask your furrier for a professional hanger.

4. Don’t cover it in a garment bag. Your fur prefers air circulation, to prevent its leather side from drying. If you absolutely must keep it in a bag for a short period of time, be sure it is in a loosely woven cloth bag.

5. Accessorize wisely. Don’t pin jewelry on your fur, and avoid sharp necklaces or bracelets that could snag your fur. Don’t use your shoulder bag on a consistent basis, since it will wear the hairs off and give your coat a bald spot. Consider wearing a scarf around your neck to protect the collar, which can be quickly matted.6. Avoid insecticides, mothproofing and other chemicals around on your fur, including perfume or hairspray directly on your fur. Perfume contains alcohol, which can dry your pelts. Once a perfume gets into your fur — including cedar from a cedar chest — it could be there to stay. Oils in the leather of your fur can become rancid and smell.

7. If your fur gets wet, don’t panic. Most furs handle snow and a light rain with ease. Shake it out and hang it to dry in a well-ventilated room, at home or office. Resist the temptation to speed the drying process by using a hair dryer or hanging it near a heat source. Fur does not like heat. After it dries, shake it again. Do not comb or brush it. If its hairs are a little bristly, simply smooth them with your hand. If your fur has been soaked through, however, take it immediately to your fur retailer for proper treatment.

8. Your fur coat and your car, best friends? Probably not. Furs don’t do well with friction or crushing, both of which they experience in your car. Use common sense when sliding into the seat, so you’re not too hard on your fur. To avoid a telltale flattened bottom print on your fur, don’t sit on it if possible, or at least not on the same spot consistently. Shake out any spots like that on your fur when you exit your vehicle. On long drives, take off your fur and wear it over you like a blanket, if you need to keep warm.

9. Keep your fur in mind when you’re on the move. Double-check your insurance policy to make sure you’re covered in case of loss at a restaurant or while traveling. At a restaurant, if the cloak room looks suspicious or overcrowded, don’t check your coat. Don’t hang it on a hook or coat tree. Fold it neatly on a chair at your table and cover with a napkin.

On a plane, the closet for hanging luggage is not the best place for your fur. When you get to your destination, you might find your fur too crushed to wear. Instead, leave it lightly on your lap for a super-lux, cozy blanket or fold it loosely, lining out, and place it at the top of an overhead bin very near you. But find a bin that is already nearly full, and put your coat on top of other luggage. Don’t tempt anyone to place luggage on top of your coat.

10. Always send your coat on summer vacation. Nothing shortens the longevity of your fur like keeping it in your closet during a long, hot summer. Send it to your furrier for professional storage. This is important every year, for a fur, a shearling, a fur-trimmed garment and even a fur hat or scarf. Unless you don’t intend to wear your fur for very long, take it in for cold storage. It’s not very expensive, and this is the single best thing you can do to care for your fur. It definitely is necessary.

11. Have your fur cleaned regularly by a fur specialist, not a dry cleaner. Furs must be cleaned by a special process. Your fur should be cleaned every year, unless it hasn’t been worn hardly at all. In that case, have it cleaned at least every other year. Besides just cleaning, this conditions your fur, makes it look better and is good for your fur. When you take your fur in for cleaning, this is also the time when your furrier gives it a check-up for any necessary repairs. Always have repairs done immediately, before little problems turn into big headaches.

Cleaning is also necessary for shearlings and fur-trimmed garments, but these usually require special attention.
