A Study in Contrasts | Fur Trends Fall 2014-Winter 2015
These past Fall 2014-Winter 2015 collections are turning a style page. We are witnessing a global design trend that fuses a streetwear aesthetic with the more refined characteristics of luxury fashion to create modern, fashion-forward looks. It is a study of contrasts — Fur pattern contrasts, light and dark, sleek and softly textured, raw and finished. It might take a little while for some of these garments to translate into the greater fashion consciousness, but their influence is obvious and palpable.
Fyodor Golan – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Simone Rocha – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Jean Paul Gaultier – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
KTZ – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
We rode the wave of color-blocking in furs a few collection cycles ago, geometric compositions and material juxtapositions more recently. Now designers take fur in new directions, creating canvases of different furs and fabrics in varying colors. The result is a bit bohemian, a bit edgy, but very urban chic and sophisticated.
Fendi – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Grinko – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Antonio Marras – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
High-tech & fur pattern contrasts!
Fur plays a role in these garment constructions as key accents. This plays equally well whether used in patchwork applications or elegantly [and not so elegantly] reworked ‘material-blocking’. The combinations of sportswear’s high-tech textiles with furs are some of the most interesting examples this season and their democratic profile will give this trend a leg to stand on for seasons to come.
Cividini – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Salvatore Ferragamo – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Francesco Scognamiglio – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Another twist? Designers are challenging conventions by applying raw-edged pelts onto tailored looks. Some are cleverly layered to emphasize the avant-garde aspect, whereas others go further as to incorporate this “Raw” quality into the construction of the garment for a statement effect.
Alexander McQueen – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Givenchy – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Gareth Pugh – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Lanvin – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
We see this concept and its variety of finishes as a trend to follow. As the ultimate luxe material fur has a polished elegance, but as the first natural material worn by mankind it also has a rugged, unrefined sensibility. Referencing both these viewpoints in design makes this an exciting (and even logical) fashion direction.
J.W. Anderson – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Isabel Marant – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
Rundholz – Fall 2014-Winter 2015
