Forecasting fur for fall 2013
Vancouver Fashion Week saw a lot of fur on the runway this season. Ukrainian designer Roksolana Bogutska set the bar high Saturday night with her exquisite coats. I was able to meet with Roksolana and see/gingerly touch her collection backstage. Fashion week can be exhausting, and Roksolana’s furs felt so dreamy, I was tempted to ask if I could curl up and hibernate in one for an hour or so. But these are coats that are meant to be seen. Coats that epitomize glamour/elegance/femme fatale-type coolness. Roksolana is on my radar now for sure. Her coats are divine, but I would suggest checking out her website to be blown away by her intricate evening dresses and beautiful leather work as well.

Fur was also a staple of Seattle designer Carole McClellan’s collection. Her pieces were a little more modern, a little more urban than Roksolana’s. Carole showcased fur looks for both men and women. It is actually the piece worn by the male model that I asked Carole if I could be waitlisted for (disclaimer: waitlisted for the vest, not the male model).

Carole has logged a lot of hours working in tanneries and has an intimate understanding of leathers and furs. She has also worked with rock stars (designing for Chris Cornell, Alice in Chains and Heart), and has a good idea of how to dress someone to feel like they can do anything. I can’t imagine wearing this vest, hood up/shades on, without feeling like a rock star.
Roksolana and Carole were not alone in showcasing fur. London’s Nova Chiu dyed rabbit fur and deer hide bright hues of fuchsia, turquoise and yellow. Turkey’s Ipek Tohumcu presented laser-cut leather jackets and dresses trimmed with black fur. The forecast is clear that fall season is fur season. So save the windbreakers and anoraks for the days you really are hiking, and see how incorporating fur into your fashion feels.
