Description
A tourmaline mink coat, full length and worked horizontally. Tourmaline is one of the harder shades to get right — a soft grey-brown shot through with a rose cast, closer to a smoky pink in some lights than a true brown. It is a natural colour, not a dye, which is why it costs what it does and why no two coats in it are quite alike.
The horizontal construction is what makes this a contemporary coat rather than an inherited-looking one. Pelts running across the body widen and shorten the line, catch light along their length, and break up the vertical fall that dates a traditional full length.
How to wear it
Against warm neutrals. Camel, cream, oatmeal. The rose cast in the fur comes forward beside them and disappears next to cold grey.
Belt it if the waist matters to you. A leather belt over a horizontal coat cuts the lines and brings the shape back — the easiest alteration there is, and it needs no sewing.
About the piece
Made and finished by hand at 212 West 30th Street, where we have been furriers since 1870. Alterations are done on the premises.
