Russian sable is the top of the trade and has been for four hundred years. This is a full length coat in it — silver-tipped skins, unsheared, matched across the whole length, which at this quality is most of the work. A furrier can spend a year gathering enough pelts that agree with one another before a coat like this is even cut.
What separates sable from every other fur is the way it moves. The guard hair falls in any direction you brush it and springs back — no other pelt does that — and the underfur is so dense that the skin stays light in the hand despite its length. It is warmer than mink, lighter than fox, and it does not go out of fashion because it was never in it.
About the piece
A coat at this level is a lifetime purchase and usually an inherited one afterwards. We would rather you came and handled it than bought it from a photograph — the difference between sable and everything else is something you feel in about four seconds, and no screen conveys it.
Made and finished by hand at 212 West 30th Street, where we have been furriers since 1870. Every alteration, cleaning and repair is done on the premises.
