Designing a fur coat involves several steps, from conceptualization to execution. Here’s a general outline of the process:

  1. Conceptualization and Inspiration:
    • Start by gathering inspiration for your fur coat design. Look at fashion magazines, runway shows, and online sources to get ideas.
    • Consider the purpose of the fur coat. Is it for everyday wear, a special occasion, or a fashion statement?
  2. Material Selection:
    • Choose the type of fur you want to use. Common fur choices include mink, fox, rabbit, chinchilla, and faux fur for ethical and sustainable options.
    • Select the color of fur that fits your design concept.
  3. Sketching and Design:
    • Create detailed sketches of your fur coat design, including front and back views, as well as any special features or embellishments you want to add.

  • Pattern Making:
    • Develop a pattern for your fur coat based on your sketches. This pattern will serve as a blueprint for cutting and sewing the fur.
    • Consider the size, fit, and style of the coat as you create the pattern.
  • Sourcing and Cutting:
    • Purchase the necessary amount of fur for your coat. Pay attention to the grain and direction of the fur for consistency.
    • Lay out your pattern pieces on the fur and carefully cut them out, ensuring that the fur is facing in the right direction.

  • Sewing and Assembly:
    • Sew the pieces together using a strong, appropriate thread for fur.
    • Pay attention to the seams and make sure they are well-constructed to avoid shedding and ensure durability.
  • Fitting and Adjustments:
    • Try on the fur coat or use a fitting model to check for fit and comfort.
    • Make any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect fit.
  • Finishing Touches:
    • Add any embellishments, such as buttons, clasps, or a lining, to enhance the coat’s aesthetics and functionality.

  • Quality Control:
    • Inspect the fur coat thoroughly for any defects, loose seams, or irregularities.
    • Trim any excess fur or threads and ensure the lining is properly attached.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance:
    • Provide care instructions to the customer if you are selling the fur coat.
    • Advise on proper storage and cleaning methods, as fur requires special care to maintain its quality.

  • Presentation and Packaging:
    • If you’re selling the fur coat, package it in an attractive and protective manner.
    • Consider including a care guide and information about the fur used.
  • Marketing and Sales:
    • If you’re planning to sell your fur coats, create a marketing plan to reach your target audience.
    • Establish sales channels, whether through your own website, a physical store, or online marketplaces.

Mink Fur is not Mythology

The mystique surrounding furs adorned as outerwear goes back millennia. The fur coat mystique has grown considerably from its inauspicious presence during the stone age(supposedly) to Greeks, Greek legends, and Romans. It has evolved in appeal 180 degrees from that time.

Fur and skin were essential commodities in the Mediterranean area, and the Phoenicians and Assyrians traded for exotic furs from Asia and Africa. Fur garments are also mentioned as gifts in Homer’s Iliad. Particularly wealthy Romans appreciated luxurious and beautiful furs. The emperor Honorius issued a decree in 397 AD that forbad his court to wear fur – probably to ensure its high trading value.

Materials and Fabric Used in the Elizabethan Era

A wide variety of fabrics like velvet, silk, satin, damask, fur, and taffeta were used extensively for Royal Wear.

These exotic materials, imported from different areas all over the world for Royalty. The Queen and her relatives were allowed to wear gold or gold tissue clothing as embellishment. Also, clothes trimmed with ermine permitted to Royalty. Nobles were allowed to wear clothes trimmed with fox or otter fur.

Raccoon coats set the trend in the 1920s & 30s men’s fashion and sparked a voracious demand for the extravagant garment across the country.

If a man could afford a fur coat, he had one; bankers, salespeople, and students alike used the style to signify or improve their social status.
If you were an Ivy League undergrad in the 1920s with a reputation to keep, you wouldn’t have seen at the homecoming game without one.

The trend allegedly emerged as a result of Davy Crockett mania and widespread interest by an elite group of young white Americans in his stories.

It spread even further by famous prominent band music jazz musicians embraced by the students who sang about the Ivy-league fur fad. In 1928, George Olsen released a recording highlighting the trend called “Doin’ the Raccoon.”

Marilyn Monroe Furs

Marilyn Monroe is the powerful symbol of seductive beauty and charisma of the ’50s and ’60s. She loved furs of all kinds—including mink, fox, and a chinchilla—on and off-screen. Pictured above, Marilyn is wearing a natural mink collar with brown satin lining. This fur was a particular favorite of the late star; she wore it often while living in New York City. On a few occasions, she wore this shawl for famous fashion and celebrity photographer Milton H. Greene. She was also spotted wearing this piece during off-hours of the filming for The Prince and The Showgirl.

From Breakfast at Tiffany’s to My Fair Lady, Miss Audrey Hepburn holds a legendary class status and sophistication. She’s known for her innocent charm and enchanting eyes for many decades. Her classic little black dress and pearls are still a fashion staple, but Audrey also incorporated fur into her wardrobe.

Although she was an icon during Hollywood’s Golden Age, modern celebrities rally around her timeless style. Audrey inspires stars like Taylor Swift, Olivia Wilde, and Anne Hathaway: When asked what “chic” means to her, Hathaway responded: “I instantly think of Audrey Hepburn—she could do no wrong. Her style was revolutionary. She was ladylike without being stuffy.”

Fur Styling 1960’s

The fur styling during the 1960s through to the ’90s was one of nuevo chic. There were retro elements as well as harkening back to old Hollywood as well. The overarching narrative of the fur coat during this period was one of functional, wearable fashion sense. A slew of notable celebrities and global potentates led the way towards this end. Fur fashion caught fire everywhere(and with many). The pursuit of a fur coat was a primary accessory goal for both men and women. It became a clear statement of one’s economic “arrival.”

The fur coat fashion disposition of the 21st century is all about the individual fashion statement. The 21st-century fur fashion scene is infused with a new sense of personal style statement and purpose/practicality.

The utilization of mink fur fashion remained pronounced in entertainment and celebrity spheres of influence. Though still substantial, the cost saw a reduction that made the fur coat acquisition possible for fur lovers.

The fur coat’s value and substance (both real and intrinsic) remain at a high bar. The fur industry itself has done a self purge that left a remaining few manufacturers and retailers. Marc Kaufman Furs is primary amongst this group.

This Is What A $1 Million Fendi Fur Coat With Silver

This Is What A $1 Million Fur Coat With Silver Tips Looks Like

Photo: Victor Boyko/Getty Images.

Designer Furs

This Fendi fur coat designed for that very special woman that deserves the very vest.

From his omnipresent crew of attractive men to his far-flung runway locales and his well-crafted personal brand, Karl Lagerfeld has never been a designer to do anything halfway. By now, we already see his extravagant creations on the catwalk — Chanel branded casino tables, anyone? — but even that doesn’t compare to what walked down the runway at the recent Fendi show.

Just last week, Lagerfeld, Fendi Fur coat, showed Fendi’s debut couture fur collection on the runway in Paris. The event also happened to mark Lagerfeld’s 50th anniversary with the Italian fashion house, so it’s not surprising that he took his “go big or go home” ethos to an entirely new level. Amongst the 36 looks crafted from mink, chinchilla, and sable, Lagerfeld’s Haute fourrure show also featured one of the most expensive items of clothing ever: a fur coat worth €1 million (for the math averse, that’s $1,085,040). According to Dazed, every single follicle on this floor-length sable overcoat is coated in pure silver, “giving a unique and contemporary luminous metallic effect to the fur while maintaining its softness.” This glimmering, moonlit finish made it the standout piece of the show — we’d certainly hope so, especially given the price tag.

Karl Largerfeld Furs

Lagerfeld wasn’t exaggerating before the show when he told WWD, “The sable coat today is expensive like people pay less for a house than for a fur coat. It’s unbelievable!” It remains to who’s willing to shell out — and brave PETA — to wear it.

On November 28th, Marc Kaufman of Marc Kaufman Furs in NYC out did Lagerfeld. The Kaufman’s signing a contract to become the only company that can make and distribute 24-carat gold coated mink furs. These 24-carat gold enhanced chinchilla furs, 24-carat sable furs. With every single follicle on these garments covered in pure 24-carat gold, this is costly, yielding beautiful results.

This 24 carat gold mink will only be available at Marc Kaufman Furs NY.

Marc Kaufman Furs of NY is in contract with Noble of Switzerland to design and manufacture a new fur line. This new fur process infuses 24-carat gold onto any fur. This process will merge the beauty of fur and the opulence of 24-carat gold.
