He’s always got an eye on the ditch
“You’ve got your eyes on the road clearly.. do you just look a little wider than most people do – my eyes go back and forth all the time,” Armsworthy says.
Looking for what most people are trying to avoid. “I’m looking over in the ditches…if I’m looking for road kill,” he said.
Yeah…you heard him…road kill…like a not so Wile E. Coyote…aced just outside of Regina. “He’s in good shape!” said Armsworthy.
It’s treasure for Gerry…who wastes no time bagging it…and throwing it in the back of his Caddy. By now…you’re probably thinking…this is odd.
“I’m going to turn him into this…a hat!” said Armsworthy.
Coyotes…foxes…badgers…whatever…if it’s fur bearing and gets hit…Gerry a self-professed “roadkill specialist”.
“Can usually turn it into something. It depends on where he is squashed…just as long as it doesn’t hurt the fur…” said Armsworthy.
In other words…no treadmarks…okay, not exactly haute couture…
But before you go calling him a mad hatter…two things to keep in mind about those hats…they’re warm…and they’re popular. “I sell them all over Canada, people order them from me… this is what we’ll get from this pelt…it just was garbage on the road…” said Armsworthy.
People even bring road kill to him. After all, there’s no shortage of it. It’s good fur, says Gerry, that would otherwise go to waste. “Instead of going and shooting something…yeah, I just get it off the road, yeah…it’s a no brainer really,” he said.
That’s one word for it. You could also say it’s a 21st century spin…on living off the land.
