Push your hand against the pile and look at what is underneath. On a cheaply dyed fur the tips are the colour and the roots are grey, because the dye was laid on the surface and never taken through. On this burgundy mink jacket the shade goes all the way down, which is slower, wastes more skins, and is the only way a dark red stays a dark red for twenty years.

Burgundy is also the shade that changes most with the light. Away from a lamp it reads almost black; under one it is unmistakably red. That is the guard hair and the underfur taking the dye at different rates, and it is a property of the pelt rather than a trick of the colour.
