Sheared mink is what a man buys when he does not want anyone to notice the coat until they are close enough to touch it. This men’s black sheared mink stroller has had the guard hair taken off, so what is left is dense underfur clipped to an even velvet that reads as black cloth from across the street and as fur from three feet away. There is no trim on it, nothing shiny, and nothing that announces itself.

It is cut like a good pea coat and built like an overcoat: double breasted, six buttons in two rows, notched lapels that sit flat, slash pockets set at the hip and a hem just above the knee, which is what makes it a stroller rather than a full-length. Sheared fur is also lighter and far less bulky than a long-haired mink, so it goes under a car seatbelt and through a restaurant door without a fuss.

Cut and fitted in our own workroom on West 30th Street, sleeves and length set to you before it leaves. It sits with the rest of our men’s fur strollers and our men’s mink coats, and it comes back to us each spring to be stored, cleaned and repaired by the people who made it. Sheared fur in particular is worth a yearly clean, because the pile holds city grit the way velvet does.
