Fox Fur Hats
A fox fur hat is the one piece that finishes an outfit rather than warming it, though it does both. These are the bubble shape — a rounded crown built up in full fox so the hat holds its own volume instead of collapsing on the head. Four here: black, red, crystal fox, and a black bubble, all cut from pelts dense enough to keep the shape through a winter.
The bubble is harder to make than it looks. The crown is blocked first and the fur worked over it in sections, with the nap running outward from the centre so the hat reads as one round mass from every angle. A hat built the other way — fur sewn flat and then shaped — goes lopsided the first time it is packed.
It suits a plain coat better than a fur one. Worn over wool or leather a fox hat carries the whole outfit; worn over a fur coat the two compete unless the pelts match, which is worth thinking about before choosing a colour.
Every hat is made, altered and repaired in our own West 30th Street workroom. Bring it back at the end of the season and we will clean, condition and re-block it so the crown starts the next winter where it started this one.
