A chinchilla coat is the most luxurious thing you can wear. Chinchilla has the highest hair density of any land animal — roughly sixty hairs grow from a single follicle — which is why a genuine chinchilla fur coat feels unlike anything else: impossibly soft, cloud-light, and unmistakable to anyone who knows fur. Marc Kaufman Furs has sourced, matched, and crafted chinchilla in New York City since 1870.
Chinchilla pelts are small and their shading runs from pale silver to deep slate, so building a chinchilla coat is painstaking work — pelts are selected side by side until the color flows unbroken across the garment. Explore full-length chinchilla coats for maximum drama, or a chinchilla jacket cut to bring the fur into everyday wear.
Chinchilla isn't only a women's fur. Our men's chinchilla coats and jackets have long been favorites of performers and athletes who want the softest, most exclusive fur made. For women, chinchilla capes, strollers, and full-length coats remain the ultimate statement of quiet luxury.
Chinchilla is delicate and valuable, so it should be bought — and cared for — by experts. We match and cut every piece in house, offer custom and made-to-order chinchilla coats, and provide the specialized cleaning and cold storage this fur requires. Given the rarity of the pelts, most chinchilla coats are offered on a consultation basis. Chinchilla is considered one of the most exclusive and expensive luxury furs in the world due to its extreme rarity, breathtaking softness, and the highly labor-intensive crafting process. Because chinchilla pelts are quite small, a single full-length coat can require over a hundred individual pelts. Perfectly matching the distinctive black, grey, and white gradient colors across that many pelts requires the meticulous eye of a master furrier, resulting in a true masterpiece of high fashion.
While chinchilla is exceptionally warm, it is renowned for its ultra-soft and delicate nature, making it better suited for special occasions, evening wear, and luxury outings rather than rugged, everyday wear in harsh weather. The delicate leather and fine hairs require gentle handling. To ensure your chinchilla garment lasts for generations, avoid heavy friction from shoulder bags, keep it away from heavy rain, and always store it in a professional cold-storage vault when not in use.
