Chinchilla Coats & Jackets

Choosing a chinchilla coat means selecting one of the densest and lightest natural pelts known to the furrier trade. Unlike heavier pelts, chinchilla hair grows with upwards of sixty fine strands from a single follicle, producing a surface that yields immediate softness while retaining warmth without unnecessary bulk. Because the leather underneath is thin and supple, handling these skins requires disciplined benchwork, exact hand sewing, and careful tension. It is an occasion and evening fur rather than an outer layer for wet or abrasive winter weather. While the dense fur insulates effectively against cold air, the garment requires conscious care to protect the fur from friction caused by shoulder straps, car seats, or damp conditions.

Our current collection includes garments cut in distinct lengths and shapes for both men and women. We produce sweeping full-length coats, versatile seven-eighths strollers, flared strollers with added movement through the hem, tailored bolero jackets, and relaxed bomber jackets. Many of these pieces utilize horizontal pelt construction, where matched skins are set crosswise in parallel bands to highlight their natural shading across the body and sleeves. Collar selections range from understated stand collars to wide shawl styles and cross-cut horizontal collars that frame the neckline comfortably.

Color choices reflect both classic pelts and nuanced dye work. In their natural form, the skins display a deep slate center that blends outward into bright silver and pale grey flanks. Alongside traditional natural tones, the collection offers dyed variations including coffee beige, rich cocoa, and soft pink. Every chinchilla coat in our inventory is supported by our complete in-house services. In our West 30th Street workroom, where Marc Kaufman Furs has operated since 1870, our craftsmen provide precise custom fittings, climate-controlled cold storage, non-immersion fur cleaning, and comprehensive remodeling as your personal style evolves over time.
